Xena Convention – First Day
Feb 5th, 2010 by Xarah

It’s Friday, February 5th, 1sts day of the Xena Convention – Today is Lucy and Renée day!

After breakfast with Jane and a couple of other Xenites (sorry forgot your names) I had to rush off to go to the Xena Meet Up. I got my name tag and a bag with lots of goodies but unfortunately I didn’t have the time to stick around too long because I had to get registered for my preferred day 🙂 Next time I wanna spend more time with you guys and get to know you a bit better.

xarah_and_callistoAnyways, I went downstairs and got in line and got my preferred Friday armband. Then I walked around, filmed the mingling and visited the Vendors’ room. There I met CALLISTO! Well, not the real one, the one from Elusia. What an amazing outfit!

There is a video on that coming 🙂

Later I ran into iFaith and her friend, we looked around the vendors’ displays, then we lost sight of each other. I have met iFaith on Twitter. It was nice meeting you in person! I wish I had remembered taking a photo with you two.

Funny, I didn’t see them again for the rest of the convention. Sometimes I would run into the same people again and again and others I would meet once. I should have gotten my photo with everybody I met. Friends from Twitter, my Weekly Chakram friends, my friends from the Xena boards. Next time!

Jane Arrives
Feb 4th, 2010 by Xarah

Back in the lobby, chatting with other Xenites, passing my cards for my fanfiction site, laughing with them. It’s great! I’m having my notebook open, letting in work (sending out message for my Youtube contest video) and keep on checking my cell phone – still no message from Jane. She should have been here by now.

Suddenly a woman was standing next to me asking me if I was from Switzerland. Didn’t think my accent was that thick I said yes. I offered her a seat and she sat down and introduced herself. Surprise! It was Jane!

Because she had left her cell phone in her car when she parked her car at the airport she could not reply and when she came to the lobby she heard me talk and pass out cards so she took a wild guess 🙂

She checked in, we got our room number and I went to get my stuff. My suitcase, my back pack AND the huge box.

I had ordered several of the Xocai products and they had arrived a few hours before Jane arrived. Mainly the Protein bars, Powerhouse Cookies and the variety pack with all four of the solid chocolates.

That new room was on the 8th floor, nice view.
After unpacking and sharing some of my goodies we went back to the lobby. There was not much else to do.

Jane and I had dinner in the Champion Restaurant. A sports bar with several dozen TVs in all sizes. I had a yummy mushroom burger and fries (seems fries come with every- and anything).

We’ve talked a lot and she’s a real nice gal. I think I got lucky with her as my roomie.

After dinner it was time to stand in line to get pre-registered. I went to the room and got a bunch of my cards and went through the line to pass them out. I hadn’t even been through half of it when I ran out of cards and had to get more. Wow, so many people!

Some of them recognized my name and are members of my Weekly Chakram. It was really great to see them but I figured I would see them again, I didn’t spend much time chatting which turned out to be a mild mistake because of the many people I did not see them again. Plus I don’t see well and therefore often don’t recognize people unless they address me. So I apologize if I didn’t say hi again.

On one of my trips to the room I discovered my cycle had started. I had seen Sonja in the line before and I seeked her out. She an Austrian friend I had met in London and asked her if she had any supply. She did and we went to her room, we suddenly had a tag-along and of course we sat there on the beds and chatted.

A little later more of Sonja’s friends with her room mate showed up. But because I really wanted to get back to my room I didn’t stay too much longer but long enough for one of them giving me her “preferred customer for Friday pass” because she had gotten another one for the whole weekend. THANK YOU WHO EVER YOU ARE!! I gave her a Xocai Powerhouse cookie for it. We were both happy.

Good thing Aunt Rosa came for a visit, hu?

First Day
Feb 4th, 2010 by Xarah

bedThe first night I stayed in a large room with a king sized bed. I wish I had taken a picture of the room I had when I was at the Xena Convention 2008 in London. Anyway, this room was huge. Had enough space to do some exercise I found in the program between the bed and the telly.

The bed itself was huge too and had lots and lots of cushions on it.

I had breakfast in the Latitude restaurant and saw a table full of women that looked like Xena fans. But they were too far I couldn’t tell. Only when they left I saw their badges and I said hi to them.

mirrorBecause Jane, my room mate’s plane was only coming in around 1.30 I had asked if I could stay in my room (at the bottom floor) until she arrives and then transfer to hers they gave me an extent to 2 am. Most of the time I sat in the lobby, looking around for more Xena fans and once in a while chatting with someone, passing around my card. That was a lot of fun. More and more – mostly women – arrived.

I had sent Jane a text message to her cell phone that I was sitting in the lobby with my green little computer (yeah, I’ll take a picture of it soon).  Suddenly a woman would stand next to me asking me if I was from Switzerland. Didn’t think my accent was that thick and pointing me there I said yes. She sat down and introduced herself. I had searched for a room mate in discussion boards and mailing lists, and on my birthday Jane had left a message that she also just book a room and was looking for a room mate. We emailed and I was really happy I could safe a little money and more importantly don’t have to be all alone. I don’t know anybody here!mirror

But because Jane, my room mate’s plane was only coming in around 1.30 pm I had asked if I could stay in my room (at the bottom floor) until she arrives and then transfer to hers. They were very kind gave me an extent to 2 am.

I had sent Jane a text message to her cell phone that I was sitting in the lobby with my green little computer and expected a replay sooner or later.

In the meantime my parcel arrived. One huge box and a bell “boy” delivered it to my room. I immediately tore into it. Chocolates, cookies, protein bars … wait! Where are the energy drinks? It turned out it was back ordered. Too many people ordered too many Xe energy drinks.

I went online and redirected them to the address of my friend in Phoenix where my next stop is going to be.

Armed with a bunch of cookies I am going back to the lobby now.

Arriving in New York
Feb 3rd, 2010 by Xarah

globeArriving in New York we had to go through security – again. The line was impossibly long but I met a couple and we talked about movies. I think on one of the pillars there was a TV and it aired a commercial for Avatar and we kinda started to talk about it.

That guy knew a lot about movies but he would not admit that he had anything to do with that industry. Oh, well. We had a nice chat during our wait and that’s better than starring holes into the air.

The reason why it takes so long is: they scan your passport; take fingerprints of both thumbs and all 4 fingers of both hands, plus take a photo. Mine must be looking goofy because it kinda scared me. The US government finally is able to fingerprint and photograph each and every person who enters the country! Pretty smart of them!

Next thing to do was to find my next gate. Zurich Airport is big but this one is huge! I actually walked passed my gate because I was busy looking around. I was looking at a “restaurant” called Wok and Roll and just thought what a great name and contemplating do I have time or hunger to get something there. Then came the gates and mine was not there even though I walked all the way to the end.

I walked back, bought some water and figured it certainly could not have gone lost or been stolen and then I found my gate – vis à vis the Wok & Roll place but there were not many people there. So I figured I was early and had time to open my notebook. Now that I write that, I ask my self if I did not look at the time and at the boarding time on my ticket.

Suddenly I heard a voice calling people … for boarding … for my plane! I got up and wanted to ask if it’s time to board already and was asked instead if my name was pronounce correctly. I said, I don’t know, I didn’t hear my name but the call for my flight. After looking at my boarding pass I was ushered through.

There, I almost missed my plane *duh* and I always thought what kind of people miss their planes and have to be called? Well, now I’m almost one of them LOL

We got to watch videos or follow the plane and for a while we were chasing the day/night border. I think I watched Bolt. Couldn’t figure out how the games worked. I was glad I bought a bottle of water, though we did get water and other drinks, I was just so thirsty. Flying makes me thirsty.

day-nightFor the longest time chased the day/night line.

I arrived at LAX in Los Angeles at 7 pm local time. Finding my suitcase and getting out of the airport was done quickly. Outside were lots of cars and Shuttles. I think I had to wait for about 10 minutes or so for the shuttle for my hotel. Other people had to wait longer. The shuttle took me smoothly to the Marriott hotel.

How long have I been up? I have no idea. Got up at 5.30 am CET and got to bed around 8 pm PST. You do the math LOL

Sweet dreams

cloudsFinally getting to my gate for the flight they had curtains set up before the seating area and again I had to answer those questions and then the guy pointed me to the right. The guy in front of me he had pointed to the left. I was wondering what that was all about. I would find out in a minute.

There was a table. Behind my table there was a woman. Behind the other table on the left there was a man. Duh.

I was to place my backpack on it and open it. She took a look at my computer and I asked her if she wanted me to open it to proof it works. She denied. Next I had to stand in front of the table with legs and arms spread wide and she ran a device over my limbs also ran her hands over arms and legs. And felt around my neck to look at my necklace. I felt like in one of those movies. Hehehe.

Another wait was awaiting. Those „incidences“ help to pass the time so I didn’t mind much – after I got through without much problems.

In the plane I had a no neighbor, which was nice, ‘cause I could spread wide. We had these little screens in the back of the seats and we could watch TV, play games or listen to music. I had a book with me and my netbook, I prefer to read some fanfiction and started a little list of things to remember when traveling (to a Xena Convention) because I started to think of things I forgot. Nothing vital though.

Departure
Feb 3rd, 2010 by Xarah

I had to be at the airport at 7 am to go through the first part of security which meant answering questions:

  • did you pack your suitcase yourself? Yes
  • did you leave it somewhere? No
  • … and so on LOL I don’t remember all the questions but if you have used an airplane lately you know what I mean

Because we were early the line was really short – after we found the right line. Then we had a croissant and some juice because we were still way too early. But after 20-30 minutes of sitting there and watching people and talking to my girlfriend I got nervous.

Going through the “gate” showing my ticket and passport was done in a breeze. Only a couple of people in line. And only then it felt like I was on the way – to an unknown adventure. Scary. Exciting. I felt like crying and laughing at the same time.

Taking the airport train, almost getting up the wrong stairs and suddenly standing in front of security with a not empty water bottle. Good thing there were several people waiting in line so I had time to finish it. Then I saw people putting there little tubes into plastic bags and I snagged one for me. Only way later I found a tube of handcleaner in my jacket.

I put my stuff and jacket into a couple of bins, took my shoes and went through the screen gate. I was nervous because of the metal I have in my leg. Of course it went of and I wanted to show the lady my special metal “passport”, she grabbed with the passport and sent me back. She didn’t even let me show her.
I turned out I still had my belt on. Off it goes. It still beeps. I want to explain to her and show her my special passport and try to pry it out of her fingers but she is strong. Sends me back. I have coins in my pocket and a thin metal box for business cards.

Placing all of that in a bin this time the screen thingy did not go off. Hu, surprise.

And I was right, I had plenty of time to go shopping if I had felt like it. Lots of shops and restaurants and people.

The Day Before
Feb 2nd, 2010 by Xarah

Gods, I’m nervous. Tomorrow goes my flight to the States. It’s been ages since my last flight and I heard stories about the new security measures.

My friend Sue suggested to make a list and together the list got bigger and bigger but it helped calm my nerves – a little.

budget-notebook1Remembering to pack all the adapters and cables for the cell phone, the notebook I had just bought and the new camera I got for my birthday.

So, on one had I have to try to remember to get everything I need because this is not just gonna be a little vacation trip, it’s gonna be a business trip. And on the other hand I have to learn how the new camera works, how I can move the pictures and films onto the computer in case I run out of space and I have to learn how this new notebook works because it runs on Windows 7. Good thing I’m flexible and used to switch between Mac and PC.

I have to be 3 hours before departure at the airport! My suspicion is: so you have plenty of time to go shopping. I know you have to go through security and get screened and all but still three hours is a looot.
What else, yes, passwords. And which programs do I want or need? And clothes. Is it going to be warm? I mean I’m going to Southern California and it never rains in Southern California. Or Arizona. Or Florida. I have been observing the weather forecasts for these three areas on this cute widgets that are on my iMac and it does not look good. It’s starting to look better and warmer but I think I’m gonna pack a long sleave shirt and I am gonna bring a sweater. I always feel cold in airplanes. Gloves? Nah.

Well, I better finish the packing now.
