Hello World! My name is Xarah Dax. Welcome to my children’s health blog. I am a local health representative and I am also an advocate for children’s health.

Children are no less prone to headaches than adults. If your  child complains of pain in their head don’t ignore it. Please!

Some of the most common triggers for headaches in children are:

Missing meals or dehydration
Getting insufficient sleep
Being under stress
Taking certain medications
Spending too much time in front of a flat screen
Consuming caffeine
Receiving a mild head injury
Infection

Eating certain foods can also trigger headaches for kids and teens. Keeping a food log for your child can help you determine if diet is a factor.

If you are prone to migraines, The National Headache Foundation recommends avoiding nuts, ripened cheeses, herring, pizza, and anything fermented.

I think it’s certainly worth a try to avoid these foods and see if the migraines reduce.

Homemade Heat Pack For Atlanta Kids

parents are great at helping their children stay healthy and safe. Today on the Atlanta Children’s Health Blog, we wanted to give parents another way to help their kids:

These easy-to-make heat packs are great for growing pains, sore muscles, or just some extra coziness at bedtime.

To start, simply go to any fabric store in the Internet, Canada, or USA area and choose some fabric (actually, you could even use an old t-shirt, fabric scraps, or a sock you have lying around). Cut two layers of the fabric one inch bigger than the desired size of the heat pack you would like for your child. A long rectangular shape is usually best.

Next, starting with one of the long sides, sew along the edges making sure to leave room for the seam allowance. Leave one short end open and fill the bag 2/3 full of rice. You can add a few drops of essential oil or herbs (these can be found at most Atlanta natural food stores) to give the heat pack a pleasant odor for your child. Tie the bag off at the open end with some cotton string, or stitch it shut, and you’re done!

When your ready to use it, be safe by only heating it in the microwave for one minute. Check to see if it’s warm enough, then add time in short increments from there. If your kids prefer a cold pack in the summer, these bags can go in the freezer to chill for a spell.

If you want to get extra fancy, any fabric store would have interesting trimmings to add. But remember to avoid ribbons that have metal wire in them.

Healthy, happy kids and their parents (aunts, uncles, grand-parents) can be comfortable all year long with these quick and easy heat packs!

Keeping EU Kids Healthy In Daycare

If you are like most parents, you do your best to keep your kids healthy. You take them to your pediatrician for health tips, teach them good hygiene habits, and try to get them to eat their veggies.

But what about kids in daycare centers? Who is making sure children wash hands after using the bathroom and cover sneezes and coughs?

When researching daycare providers, ask them about their health and safety policies. Do they require that sick children stay home? Do they clean and disinfect tables and play areas? Do they require frequent hand washing?

Parents of children in daycare can do much on their own. They need to keep up-to-date on kids immunizations and ensure that their children are eating a wide variety of healthy foods to keep their immune system ready for anything that comes their way.

Even with all parents and daycare providers do to prevent it, children will get sick. However, some studies have shown that children in daycare actually get less colds when they’re older than children that stay home. When first attending daycare, children may get sick a lot, but after about one year they often build up immunity, and are sick about as often as their stay-at-home counterparts. I guess the old saying is true (at least in this case): what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.

It might be an awkward subject for any parents to bring up with an older child, but making sure your son or daughter is having regular bowel movements is essential for their health – at all ages. If your child is experiencing problems with this, try these natural fixes before you resort to a medication.

Increased water intake is often all it takes for Scottsdale area kids to overcome this problem since dehydration is a common cause.

To encourage your child to drink more water, try getting them their own water bottle and keeping it full in the fridge. That way, even if your child is too small to reach the tap themselves, they always have easy access to cold water.

My kids prefer the water at room temperature. And they love their own green water bottle. Each have a little icon to mark it their own.

It’s important to evaluate the diet of your child and look for opportunities to introduce more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. And Water. Mosaic Magic For Your Kids

Parents know how important it is for kids to express themselves artistically. This can be a great boon for a child’s cognitive development as well as their emotional health.

But sometimes the crayons and paper can get a little boring for kids. Luckily, there are lots of easy ways to encourage children to create pictures and designs with unique materials and methods.

Mosaic Magic For Your Kids

One of these methods is mosaics. Instead of drawing on paper, cut pieces of colored paper into small pieces. Then, allow your kids to organize the small pieces into a picture or design. Once they’ve completed their picture, give them some glue and have them adhere the mosaic to another complete piece of paper.

And you don’t have to stop at paper. There are plenty of materials that can be made into a mosaic.

Mosaic Magic With Beans

A favorite material is dried beans. They are inexpensive, come in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes, and can be found in any grocery store. However, remember that dried beans can be a choking hazard, so only use these and other small objects with older children.

If your children are like mine, they love sweets. It seems like it takes a few years for children to appreciate flavors more sophisticated than Hubba Bubba and Fruity Pebbles. If my kids were in charge of the grocery list, we would eat popsicles for breakfast and gummy bears for dinner.

If you are trying to wean your kids (or yourself) off sugar, I suggest you reduce it in phases. Radical changes rarely succeed for children.

Here are 3 ways to reduce the sugar in your kid’s diets.

1) Drink less soda: they are loaded with sugar and empty calories.
2) Use whole grains: complex carbs provide long-term energy. Brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole-grain pasta are all readily available at grocery stores.

Elementary teachers advise sending fruit, vegetables, and protein in children’s lunches and leaving processed, sugary snacks at home. They notice that children who eat healthy learn and behave better.

When shopping at your grocery store you may want to start reading labels on snacks more carefully. A recent study conducted by Britain’s Food Standards Agency (their version of the FDA) found that seven dyes could affect children’s intelligence by up to five IQ points! When reading Georgia food labels check for Yellow #5, Yellow #6, and Red #40. In fact, Red #40 is banned in several European countries.

My kids love dried apricots, raisins, sliced apples with sunflower seed butter, and snap peas. Think about it: natural foods like apples, pears, bananas… don’t have labels. The less ingrients on a label the better it is. If it’s got more than 8 be careful and consider not buying it.

Keeping children healthy is among the highest priorities for parents.

There are hundreds of qualified pediatricians to help with your health goals in your area, but how do you choose one?

Since these medical professionals are the people you will rely on to give your child immunizations and advise you on proper nutrition for your family, you’ll want someone you’re comfortable with.

One of the best things you can do is to ask other parents which pediatricians they recommend. As soon as you have a few names, you can begin calling the offices and perusing the websites for each practice.

Here are a few questions to keep in mind when talking to the receptionist or nurse on the phone:

Where did the doctor go to medical school?
Is the staff friendly?
Are the office hours convenient for your schedule?
Does the doctor belong to a group practice where they can cover for each other during vacations, etc.?
What hospital does the doctor or practice use?

When you have narrowed down your list to a pediatrician that fits these criteria, you can visit the office and ask the staff or pediatrician any additional questions you may have. This is one of the best ways to understand children’s healthcare.

As a parent of active children, I’m sure you’re always on the lookout for places where germs lurk, and you probably know that toothbrushes have the potential to grow a lot of bacteria. However, there are some simple rules you can follow in your Phoenix area home to keep your child’s toothbrush (and your kid’s mouth) as healthy as possible.

One of the best ways to limit bacterial growth on a toothbrush is to allow it to dry completely between uses. This is best done by storing the toothbrush in a toothbrush holder on the counter, not tucked away in a drawer where air flow is limited.

A toothbrush holder is superior to a cup because it’s important that neighboring toothbrushes don’t touch and share germs.

Air drying toothbrushes is easy when you purchase two for each child at your nearest Scottsdale drugstore. Teach your kids to alternate between the two so they each have more time to dry out all the way.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, mainly because normal wear and tear will make them less effective at cleaning teeth. But, regardless of the age of the toothbrush, replace it after your child has a cold or other illness.
